# IP65 vs IP66 Bathroom TV: Which Rating Do You Actually Need?

Spec sheets for waterproof TVs lean heavily on two numbers: IP65 and IP66. The difference is one digit, and the marketing around it can make the gap look bigger or smaller than it really is. This guide explains what the codes measure, how the two ratings are tested, and where each one belongs in a real bathroom.
What an IP code measures
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the code is defined by IEC 60529. Each rating has two digits:
- First digit (0–6): protection against solid objects and dust.
- Second digit (0–9): protection against water.
A "6" in the first position means dust-tight. Both IP65 and IP66 share it, so the comparison is entirely about the second digit: water.
The second digit is not a simple "more is better" ladder. Ratings 1 through 6 describe water arriving from outside (drips, spray, jets). Ratings 7 and 8 describe immersion. A device rated IPX7 has not necessarily passed the jet test for IPX6, which is why some outdoor and marine equipment lists two water ratings (for example, IP66/IP68).

The difference between 5 and 6
Both tests use a nozzle spraying water at the enclosure from every practicable direction for at least three minutes. The variables are nozzle size, flow rate and pressure.

IPX5 simulates a garden-hose scenario. IPX6 simulates heavy seas or a pressure hose-down, the kind of thing a ship's deck or an outdoor kiosk experiences. Neither test involves submersion, and neither involves steam or long-term humidity.
What actually happens in a bathroom
A bathroom TV faces three kinds of water exposure:
- Direct splashing and spray from a shower head, a hand shower, or a child in the tub. This is a low-pressure event and well within IPX4–IPX5 territory.
- Condensation and steam. Warm, saturated air cools on the screen surface and inside any unsealed gap. This is the failure mode that ruins most ordinary TVs in bathrooms, and no IP water test measures it directly. It is the sealed housing, the glass bonding and the ventilation of the room that manage condensation, not the second digit.
- Cleaning. Housekeeping staff in hotels sometimes spray cleaner directly onto mirrors and wipe. In residential settings this is gentle; in a hospitality setting it happens daily for years.
For all three, IP65 is adequate. The extra headroom of IP66 matters when there is a realistic chance of a high-pressure jet: a wet room cleaned with a pressure washer, a spa or hydrotherapy area, a shower with high-flow body jets aimed at the wall, or an outdoor pool cabana that gets hosed down.
Why the rating is only half the story
Two TVs can carry the same IP66 rating and age very differently in a bathroom. Ask about the details behind the number:
- Is the rating for the whole unit or the front only? Some products seal the glass face but leave the rear and connectors exposed, on the assumption they are recessed into a dry cavity. That is fine if the cavity really is dry.
- How is the glass bonded to the panel? A fully bonded (optically laminated) front eliminates the air gap where condensation forms. A gasketed glass sheet over a panel leaves a gap that can fog.
- What about the connectors? Power and HDMI entries need sealed glands or a protected cable route; the rating assumes the tested configuration.
- Operating temperature and humidity. A bathroom can sit at 90 percent relative humidity for an hour after a shower. Look for a stated humidity range, not just an IP code.
- Anti-fog heating. Many bathroom mirror TVs include a heated film or demister behind the mirror. This has nothing to do with IP but is often more useful day to day.

What IP does not tell you
- Steam-room suitability. Steam rooms run at 40–50 °C and 100 percent humidity. That is a thermal and materials question, not an IP test.
- Electrical safety. The IP code says nothing about voltage, isolation or earthing. Those come from the electrical installation and from the product's safety certifications (CE, UL, ETL and so on).
- Long-term seal integrity. Gaskets age. A well-designed unit uses bonded glass and silicone seals rather than relying on foam tape.
A practical way to decide
If the screen will never be hit by a pressurised jet, IP65 is the sensible specification, and money is better spent on a bonded mirror face, a demister and the right brightness. If there is any chance of a pressure hose, body jets or years of spray-and-wipe cleaning, specify IP66 and confirm the rating applies to the complete unit as installed.

FAQ
Is IP66 waterproof enough to submerge? No. Neither IP65 nor IP66 covers immersion; that is IPX7 and IPX8. Submersion is not a realistic bathroom scenario for a wall-mounted TV in any case.
Does a higher IP rating mean the TV handles steam better? Not directly. Steam and condensation are managed by sealing, glass bonding and demister heating, which IP tests do not measure. A bonded IP65 unit may outperform a gasketed IP66 unit in a steamy room.
Can I use an IP65 TV in a shower? If the shower has ordinary flow and the TV is not directly in the spray path, IP65 is usually acceptable. For wet rooms or body-jet showers, IP66 is the safer choice.
Is there an IP rating for outdoor TVs? Outdoor TVs typically carry IP55 to IP66 depending on whether they are designed for covered or fully exposed positions. Rain is covered by IPX3–IPX4; hose cleaning pushes you to IPX5 or IPX6.
Where is the IP rating on a spec sheet? Usually under "protection class" or "environmental." If a product only lists "waterproof" without a code, ask for the IEC 60529 rating and a test report.
